An AI nude image of your child: what can you do?

Sources reviewed on November 1, 2026. Based on public advice, see below.

Report it and get help taking it down. In the US, report to NCMEC's CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678. Take It Down is a free service for images of people under 18. Tell your child it's not their fault. NCMEC says offenders in many cases were people in the child's life.

What is going on?

NCMEC says generative AI is being used to create child sexual abuse material. More than 275 direct victims were identified in 2024 and 2025 alone. In many of those cases, the offender was someone in the child's life with direct access to them. These images are also used in sextortion.

What do you do first?

  1. Stay calm. Tell your child it isn't their fault.
  2. Do not download or forward the image yourself. Take It Down warns against this. Note the links where it appears.
  3. Report it. In the US, use the CyberTipline, at report.cybertip.org or by calling 1-800-843-5678. In an emergency, call 911 or 999.
  4. Get support. In the UK, call the NSPCC at 0808 800 5000.

How does Take It Down work?

Take It Down is a free NCMEC service. It assigns a digital fingerprint, a hash value, to an image or video. Participating platforms can use it to detect the image. It's for nude, partially nude or sexually explicit images of people under 18, and it's open to children anywhere in the world.

You don't have to share personal information. It doesn't work on encrypted platforms, and the submission must be made on the device where the image is.

The CyberTipline can also help remove a specific image. NCMEC analysts notify the companies and keep watching until it's gone.

What can you do beforehand?

You can't prevent every misuse. You can share fewer pictures in public. Read what to check before you post a photo of your child. And tell your child that they can always come to you, no matter what the picture shows.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI-made image against the law?

NCMEC treats it as child sexual abuse material. Laws differ by country and state, so report it and ask the police or a lawyer about your case.

Does Take It Down delete the picture?

It creates a fingerprint so participating platforms can find and remove it. It may not catch everything, and it doesn't work on encrypted services.
