How do you teach your child to say no?

Sources reviewed on November 1, 2026. Based on public advice, see below.

Practice it out loud, with sentences your child can actually say. Teach that it is OK to say no to anyone when something feels wrong, and that a no is followed by walking away and telling a trusted adult. Your child learns this by pretending, not by being warned.

What should a young child be allowed to say no to?

To anything that makes them uncomfortable, from anyone. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) puts it plainly in its tips for parents: "It's OK to be rude if someone is making you uncomfortable. Say 'no,' walk away and tell a trusted adult."

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) adds that your child should have a solid rule about touch. A rule is easy to understand, which makes it easier to spot a touch that is not OK and to say no to it.

How do you practice without scaring your child?

Use short pretend games. NCMEC suggests this one: your child is at the playground and an adult asks for help. What should they do? The answer: say no and walk away. Adults should ask other adults for help, not children.

Have your child say it in a firm voice. NCMEC suggests "I can't help you" for this situation. Praise the voice, not just the words.

Why not just tell them the rule once?

Because knowing a rule and using it are different things. A Cochrane review of 24 studies looked at school programs on this topic. Many used rehearsal and role play. Children gained skills and knowledge, and the review found no evidence that the programs raised or lowered children's anxiety or fear. It measured school lessons, not picture books at home.

What do you do when your child says no to you?

Take it seriously where you can. If your child says no to a hug or a tickle, stop. The AAP calls this body autonomy: their body is theirs to control. Read more about when your child will not hug a relative.

A child can also say no and it can still go wrong. That is never the child's fault. Read how to help your child tell you anything.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can you start?

The AAP says you can start teaching body boundaries and safety as soon as your child can talk.

Should my child be rude to adults?

NCMEC says it is OK to be rude if someone is making your child uncomfortable. Saying no and walking away is enough. Your child does not have to explain.

Will this make my child say no to everything?

Young children test limits anyway. Explain that safety rules are about feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, not about bedtime. Our sources do not measure this question.
